How Now Do I Live My Life?

Students Answer the Question
By Ed Chasteen

Thirty students were in my class called U.S. Pluralism and taught at William Jewell College in spring 2006. On the first day of class each student drew an envelope. Inside was a name, phone number and email address. The student assumed the identity of this person for the next 14 weeks. Students visited the homes and places of worship of their persons. Their persons came twice to campus to visit with the entire class. By phone and email they maintained regular contact. Students wrote the autobiographies of their person. As their final exam, students wrote an essay: How Now Do I Live My Life. Each essay appears below. The names of students have been omitted. Essays are numbered only so readers may locate them more easily.
